Okay, comic book fans.  Here’s a spoiler image from the January 15 episode of Smallville that, if you’re a long-time DC Geek like I am, will get your heart aflutter.

I can’t even tell you the title of the episode, since that’s as much a spoiler as the picture, but if you drag over the blank between the quotes, you’ll see that it’s “Legion“.

I received an e-mail from my local comic book store this afternoon about Free Comic Book Day. To help out folks who can’t get to their local comic book store, they’re offering FCBD books (from this year and previous years) via their web site, just for the price of shipping. While you’re on the site, take a look at some of the other great books they’re offering, and take advantage of their FCBD discount.

For those who do not have access to a local comic shop (or our out of town). Go to http://www.comicbookrelief.com/ and click on the Free Comic Book Day Logo to see all the books being offered, you can order up to 1 of each book for free. You just pay shipping. (Every 10 books is $5.00). This is my way to make sure everyone can participate in this event. This year we are also offering a few that we still have available from previous years.

As always you can visit one of the Comic Relief_s Stores for the Free Comics and other great stuff. As a special bonus to online customers, if you place an order Saturday you can get 15% off (code FCBD08 ) any order.

Hopefully everyone can find and make it out to support your local comic shop. But if not we are here for you.

All orders for free comics must be placed on Saturday between 12:01am and 11:59pm. Any orders for free comics out side of those times may be ignored. All may not be available as we will pull orders throughout the day. Free shipping coupon is only valid on a $100.00 purchase. Orders for free comics cannot be picked up.

The New York Daily News has a spoiler for today’s DC Universe 0 comic book. It’s probably the biggest event to hit DC Comics in decades, so don’t read it if you don’t want to know.

For all of you comic book fans out there, The New Yorker has a great article by award-winning author Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay) on what I believe is an under-examined part of the pop-culture psyche: the superhero costume. From the origins of the costumes, to comparisons between various heroes’ garb, to the practical issues involved, Chabon touches on all facets in a comprehensive and entertaining article.

Check it out here.

Jumper Prequel Comic Preview Online

One of the other previews that we saw prior to Cloverfield is far a new sci-fi action movie called Jumper, starring Hayden (Anakin Skywalker) Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Rachel (The O.C.) Bilson. It’s based on a YA (Young Adult) novel, which I didn’t know until today, and is the story of a young man who discovers not only that he can teleport, but also that he is part of a society of teleporters who are engaged in an ancient war with a group called the Paladins. The movie looks cool, and the novel (and its sequel) have gotten great reviews (I’m gonna go search them out this evening), and Oni Press is offering a prequel comic book. The first 23 pages (it’s a 96 page graphic novel) are available online at Oni Press.

Not Just for Comic Books Anymore

I was sitting in the drama room at the high school last Saturday during our set build, eating pizza with a bunch of drama parents and students. Someone, asked what super power everyone would want to have if they could choose one. It was just an idle question, a creative kid filling a conversational lull with a question that could be answered by any of the three generations present. Because just about everyone, at some point or another, has dreamed about what kind of hero they’d be.

Well, there’s a group of people out there who, while they may not have super powers, has not let that stop them from doing good. In brightly colored costumes. There are between 150 and 200 in the United States (and another half a hundred elsewhere in the world) who dress up in costumes to fight crime, or poverty, or just bring a smile to people’s faces. There’s a great article here that discusses a few of them.

And if you think you’d like to join them, you can get your battle togs at Hero Gear.

(By the way, I’d want a Green Lantern power ring.  I’m just sayin’.)
