ONYD: Why the President Gave Up Golf

I’m going to hopefully blog some tomorrow morning while I watch the political shows. I’ve got some movie reviews and a few other things that I’ve been holding onto, but it’s kinda late tonight to get into it.

I do want to offer an ONYDer to President Bush, who, while participating in an interview with and users of Yahoo earlier this week, was asked what sort of sacrifices he’s made to honor the brave men and women who have given their lives and limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan. The President’s response?

He’s given up golf.

The fact that he’s had meniscus problems and has had to stop running as well is simply a coincidence, evidently. The real reason he’s given up golf is to honor the troops. He even sites a specific day when the realization that “this just isn’t worth it” came to him, following the assassination of a U.N. representative in Iraq. Of course, there are at least two documented occurrences of the President golfing following that date, but, again, those must’ve just been coincidence, and I’m sure he wasn’t enjoying himself.

Video of the ONYD moment is at Yahoo News.

People who are familiar with him tend to love Keith Olbermann and his (week)nightly Countdown show on MSNBC. I enjoy Keith and his guests. Usually, he keeps the tone fairly light and sarcastic, but every now and then something really hits him the wrong way, and his head practically explodes.

Click on the video below to see Olbermann’s highly charged response to the President’s latest ONYDer. Olbermann actually touches on a couple of different points from the Politico/Yahoo interview. The piece is about 10 minutes long, and every time I watch it, I expect Keith’s head to explode.

(If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, the transcript is available at Scroll to the bottom, then back up to the last long monologue.

ONYD: Understanding the Economy

Following criticism from Hillary Clinton aimed at John McCain, Republican National Committee spokesman Alex Conant issued a response which in part, reiterated the traditional RNC characterizations of Democrats as tax-and-spend (as opposed to Republicans, who are spend-and-let-the-kids-pay-for-it):

“The Democrats’ plans for more taxes, more spending and more regulations will not grow the economy or create jobs. America needs strong leadership that understands the economy – not higher taxes and spending like the Democrats are proposing.”

Strong leadership that understands the economy. Like John McCain, right? ONYD!

John McCain has been quoted as recently as this past December as saying “The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should.” (Boston Globe, 12/18/07)
